EREN: "The Church and the GCA Administration Should Learn from the Mistakes of the Past"

Çarşamba, Nisan 23, 2025

Reacting to the provocative statements of the Greek Orthodox Church and GCA leader Nikos Christodoulides, YTB President Abdullah Eren said, "The Church being used for political provocations and the divisive rhetoric of the GCA administration can never eliminate the legitimate presence of the Turkish Cypriot people in these lands."

YTB President Abdullah Eren responded to the hate speech of the Greek Orthodox Church such as "expelling the Turks" and the provocative statements of GCA leader Nikos Christodoulides like "tearing down the wall of occupation." In his written statement, Eren emphasized that Türkiye will continue to protect its guarantor rights and the security of Turkish Cypriots under all circumstances.

Statements Erect a Wall Against Peace

Eren remarked that religious leaders and politicians should work towards reconciliation instead of polarizing society, saying: "Hate speech from the Greek Orthodox Church like 'expelling the Turks' and the provocative statements of GCA leader Nikos Christodoulides about 'tearing down the wall of occupation' promote conflict rather than the search for peace in Cyprus. The duty of religious leaders and politicians is not to polarize societies but to reconcile them. The Church being used for political provocations and the destructive rhetoric of the GCA administration can never eliminate the legitimate presence of the Turkish Cypriot people in these lands. Türkiye will continue to protect its guarantor rights and the security of Turkish Cypriots under all conditions. As a result, those who dream of 'tearing down walls' with such provocative rhetoric are indeed erecting a wall against peace. The Church and the GCA administration must learn from the mistakes of the past and understand that the only way to build peace in Cyprus is through mutual equality and respect."
